It took more than 30 years from the adoption of the Constitution for most states to allow
people without property to vote. Women gained the right to vote in all U.S.
elections only until 1920, and young people aged 18 to 20 did so only until 1971.
African Americans in the United States couldn't vote until after 1965.
Voting is very important in the United States since it is the basis on which citizens
participate on how the country is run. Voting plays a major part in popular
sovereignty. Although being allowed to vote was strongly fought for, ironically,
voter turnout is very low. What used to be 80% voter turnout is now about 55 to 65%.
